AMADEUS REMASTERED HD - MOZART INSULTS SALIERI BY PLAYING HIS OWN PIECE BETTER THAN HE DID

Reddit
This is one of my favorite scenes from Amadeus. It is rare for a film to have two actors be nominated for the same award. Thomas Hulce eventually lost to F. Murray Abraham at the Oscars, but there is no denying that both gave outstanding performances.

It was said that the real Mozart had a very childlike laugh which Hulce does his best imaginative version of. The laugh is so jarring and out of the blue that it catches the Emperor off guard twice.

Mozart is either arrogant or socially unaware because he insults Salieri multiple times. As Mozart plays Salieri's little march and notes "the rest is just the same, isn't it?" you can see how maligned Salieri felt. Then to top it off Mozart declares "that doesn't quite work, now does it?" and then proceeds to take Salieri's tune and add embellishments and improvisation such that Salieri can only look on in jealousy mixed with resentment.

Salieri's jealousy and contempt for Mozart is best summed up with the line "Grazie, Signore..." as he looks up at the crucifix.

All rights to Amadeus (Orion pictures).

The emperor butchered Salieri's piece, but Mozart was able to play it perfectly by only hearing it and then improvising the melody... "the rest is just the same, isn't it?" Mozart so innocent in his behavior he doesn't realize how insulting he is LOL

@jacknapyer Disagree that M. knew he was insulting Salieri - the Mozart character portrayed here came from a child-like perspective - same place that his music came from is the place that he's still self-centered {in a positive, child-like way} with his emotions and social interactions. He could definitely be coming from an innocent, socially-unknowing/-unaware place. That silly laughter may be the filmmaker making M's immaturity obvious to the viewer.

@xue 717 CHILL, man {I assume ' man' } .... You yourself - like everyone - have some areas in life where you are not quite competent and thus you are LEARNING. Perhaps such an area is an intimate human relationship? Or perhaps ornithology? Or quantum physics? Etc..... Is important to be able to explain one's field of expertise to ANYone, with patience.

Mozart was an early version of Michael Jackson. Prodigies, raised by abusive, gold digging fathers, rented to the elite for whatever pleasure they wanted to derive from them. A type of upbringing that destroys any basic understanding of 'normalcy', and even 'morality'. I contend that Mozart actually adored Salieri, and this was his way of showing it (and in some way Salieri understood, as he WOULD have been WELL AWARE of Wolfgang's unfortunate upbringing). And the fact that there is absolutely no historical evidence that Ludwig Van's teacher held any animosity towards the twat who wrote 'Leck mich im Arsch', speaks volumes.

One of the greatest movies of all time. I was introduced to it when I was in college when the "Intro to Humanities" professor used to play 10 minutes at the end of the class every class. It made me a huge fan of classical music and I am so grateful for that.

When I read the comments here, Im not sure if everybody understands that this is a movie. It didnt happen, ok? And Salieri himself is one of the most gifted people in music history, who didnt only wrote beautiful music, but did a lot of theory, ground breaking work and education. He was just 6 years older than Mozart and when Mozart neither had success nor a job, Salieri already was in the highest ranks and one of the most important people in "music bizz". I hate this movie for "establishing" long proven fake news in the mainstream audience. In his lifetime, Salieri was far more successfull and admitted than Mozart. In reality, there was a time when Mozart hated Salieri, but later they had a pretty good relationship. The legend that he killed Mozart appeared long after their deaths, when Mozarts work gained in popularity and Salieris lost and I think it`s very very bad that this movie put him in this bad light for a drama plot.

A commonplace false historian, Mozart admired Salieri and considered him the greatest musician of his time. In fact Salieri was the musician at the Emperor's court, certainly not just any guy. And remember how Mozart took with both hands of Vivaldi's repertoire. When he too has made an authentic plagiarism taken by Clementi in Sonata-opera 24 n.2 for Ouvertur of the Magic Flute. : D Salieri has never copied from anyone, but he has been a teacher to many. This is right for the memory of Salieri, muddied by a film just to make a good cash.

Absolutely classic scene from a great movie... Mozart and Salieri - excellent example of "Loath at first sight" 🤣 I know great liberties were taken by the writer(s) in terms of historic events, but I don't think it was ever meant biographically anyway.

I always liked this film but I found the casting very odd. To this day I find most of the main cast as odd choices that gives the film a comedic feel. Perhaps this was done on purposed, but the story doesn't feel comical, so there's a clash. Oh well, still enjoy it!

A beautiful film, but in my opinion biased. We are talking about a great musician and I cannot think that Salieri hated him or that Mozart wanted to criticize Italian opera. Who makes music is usually a person above who appreciates beautiful music and has no envy just because musicians are sensitive and do not look at material things. The reality is that Mozart died very poor and Salieri died in an asylum. They were two artists.
